Doctor of Education (EdD)

School of Education

Reading and Literacy specialization

Position yourself to meet the growing demand for leadership expertise in reading and literacy, a skill area that plays a pivotal role in individual student success. Designed around national education standards in the field, this EdD Reading and Literacy specialization is one of few available online. The curriculum covers such topics as program development and management, assessment and evaluation, data-driven decision making, and district, state, and national policies that can affect how reading is taught. In addition to online course work, field experiences provide opportunities to apply your newly gained knowledge in diverse educational settings and identify a reading and literacy challenge to address in an action dissertation project. Convenient electronic textbooks are available for most courses, which lowers costs and provides immediate access to course materials. People who choose this specialization are often P-12 teachers and administrators interested in pursuing reading and literacy leadership roles in schools, districts, and other educational organizations.

This program is not designed for certification, licensure or endorsement. For more information about educator licensing, please see our Education Licensure Resource site.

Reading PhD

November 3, 2010MiMi What type of jobs does this PhD lead to? I'm already holding a licence to teach and a Master's in Education, but still cannot find a job. I'm curious what type of higher education classes this allows us to instruct. Thanks.

This is NOT a PH.D program

April 1, 2011Ari To those of you who keep referring to this as a Ph.d program, it is not. An ED.d is not as respected as a Ph.d because it is not research based. Even if you get an ED.D from an Ivy, it still does not confer the same prestige.

PH.D in reading

December 9, 2010Coni I graduated from Capella on August 8, 2009 and I am currently a Developmental Reading Instructor at a community college. I am interested in this degree as it relates to my job; yet, I am torn between this degree and the Higher Education & Adult Learning degree from Walden. I am torn on which one I want to do.

How many of you have degrees in reading literacy?

February 21, 2011Tracie Who out there has a job in reading literacy? Who out there is enrolled in this program of study? Tell me what you think of it? Pros/cons? What is your current position...community college, 4 year or high school teacher? Trying to decide if I really want to pursue this degree.
